What is START UP?

The #1 small business show on television for 13 years running, START UP celebrates the stories of American entrepreneurs and small business owners. Hosted by Emmy-nominated Gary Bredow, the show takes viewers on a journey across the country, spotlighting a diverse group of entrepreneurs. Bredow dives into their personal experiences, discovering what it really takes to turn a dream into a thriving business.

The idea for START UP came about during the tough times of the 2009 financial crisis when jobs were hard to come by and uncertainty was everywhere. Bredow noticed that many people around him were opting to start their own businesses rather than hunt for traditional jobs. “It was a perfect storm. Issues that kept people up at night turned into opportunities they’d only dreamed of from their cubicles,” he recalls. “That’s how START UP was born—turning tough times into chances to shine.”

Bredow reached out to his friend and producer Jenny Feterovich, and together they launched the series in 2013. Casting 39 businesses to feature in the first season, their efforts landed them critical acclaim and the cover of The New York Times business section. Now in its 13th season, Bredow expresses his enthusiasm: “We’re excited to keep going as long as there are incredible stories to tell.”

Over the past 13 years, START UP has evolved into a beloved series with millions of viewers and 169 episodes filmed across 46 states. Its influence stretches beyond the screen, serving as an educational resource in schools and universities, and even being shown in prisons to help reduce recidivism.
The series has received 6 Daytime Emmy-nominations, including Outstanding Host, Outstanding Writer, and Outstanding Casting, a testament to its impact and quality.
